Who We Are

You probably know that BC Cancer cares for people with cancer in British Columbia. We’re also working to develop better treatments for cancer patients, and to find out what causes the disease. In fact, we know that cancer is not one disease, but that it takes many different forms. Understanding the factors that lead to different types of cancer can help us to prevent it. Some of these causes are genetic, or environmental. But more than 50 percent of all cancers can be prevented by some very do-able practical things that you can learn about on this site.

Just as we have hospitals and cancer centres throughout the province, BC Cancer also has a team of Prevention Educational Leaders, people who help British Columbians understand what they can do to get healthy and stay that way. Our PELs, as we call them, work with people from preschoolers to senior citizens, to figure out ways that we can all live healthier lives and reduce the incidence of cancer in our province.

After all, prevention is better than any cure.

If you’d like to find out more about cancer prevention and healthy living, you can always contact a Prevention Educational Leader, or click here to contact us directly.

We want to know what you think. Write to us at hi5@preventionprograms.org if you have any questions or stories to tell us about cancer and cancer prevention and/or click here to fill out our survey to let us know what you think of this website.
