Who We Are

You probably know that the BC Cancer Agency cares for people with cancer in British Columbia. We’re also working to develop better treatments for cancer patients, and to find out what causes the disease. In fact, we know that cancer is not one disease, but that it takes many different forms. Understanding the factors that lead to different types of cancer can help us to prevent it. Some of these causes are genetic, or environmental. But more than 50 percent of all cancers can be prevented by some very do-able practices—things that you can learn about on this site.

Just as we have hospitals and cancer centres throughout the province, the BC Cancer Agency also has a team of Prevention
Educational Leaders—people who help British Columbians understand what they can do to get healthy and stay that way. Our PELs, as we call them, work with people from preschooler to senior citizens to figure out ways that we can all live healthier lives and reduce the incidence of cancer in our province.

After all, prevention is better than any cure.

Through our Healthy Living Schools program, we work with school kids of all ages to promote good health practices and to understand the risk factors for cancer and other diseases.
