Safe Sun Exposure

To remember to be sun safe every day, you will need some specific strategies. Read through these strategies and order them from 1 to 10: #1 will be the strategy that you would find DO-ABLE on a typical day. #10 will be the most difficult for you to accomplish in your daily life.

Always use a sunscreen with 30+ SPF or ‘sun protection factor’. Apply it according to the directions on the package, and reapply as needed.
If you are swimming, boating, or sweating, use water-resistant sunscreen and reapply as needed.
Wear light layers of loose fitting clothing for protection from the sun. A t-shirt isn’t always effective; the SPF of a plain white t-shirt can be as low as 4!
Wear a hat with a brim; a 3-inch (7-cm) brim all the way around is the best.
Carry a sun umbrella or parasol for sun and heat protection.
Wear sunglasses that offer UV protection.
Use a lip balm with an SPF of 30 or more.
Avoid the most damaging hours of the sun between 11 am and 3 pm.
Relax in the shade when possible.
Don’t forget about sun safety in winter. Snow and ice can reflect the sun’s rays and increase UV exposure.
